This small rare-breed sheep originates from Soay in the St Kilda group of Islands in Scotland. Where they originate from before this is not clear but they have similarities with sheep found on some Mediterranean islands such as Corsica and Sardinia. It is a very hardy breed able to cope with extremely harsh conditions with a grazing pattern more like a goat than a sheep. Flexigraze uses these sheep on rough scrubby ground or to help with bracken control. They naturally loose their fleece in the spring and as they are not sheared their wool does not appear in our yarns.
We purchase some of our Soays from local smallholdings where they are often kept as part of a ’hobby farming’ flock.
